
REFUGEE WEEK
December 2006
Attracted about more than 350 local students, adding to the official attendance of more than 600 people. The Refugee Week was first celebrated on Station Place, Werribee on Thursday 26th of October by Wyndham City Council in conjunction with MRC Westgate.
During the 3 hours lunch free BBQ, everyone than gets to witness the reflecting and understanding of the Refugee experienced through many difference performances including;
· Karen refugees dancing in their national costumes
· Stories of Hardship
· Sudanese singers and Police band Code One.
The next day the Refugee Week was continue to be celebrated at MRC Westgate Altona North on Second Ave.
The day was started with official opening spoke by Chev Joe Attard MRC Westgate Chairperson. Continue by special guest speaker deputy Mayor Cr. Leigh Handing.
Later spoke by Sudanese and Karen Communities sharing their personal refugee journeys to Australia.
Before the free lunch BBQ was provided to everyone, members of the Hobson’s Bay City Council, MRC Westgate, the Polices and everyone who attended were invited to participate in the fun singing performances by Ajak Kwai a Sudanese Dinka Singer.
The day ended with Marko Perkovic CEO of MRC Westgate spoke a vote of Thanks.
